You did it! After countless days of searching the internet and spending numerous hours visiting homes in person, you have finally found your dream home. You have successfully navigated through the daunting tasks of pre-approvals, home inspections, appraisals, financial documentation, surveys, insurance quotes, utility connections, and finally, the big day – closing day! With keys in hand and moving trucks on their way, congratulations are in order. However, amidst the excitement, you may find yourself wondering about mundane details like trash pick-up and how to dispose of certain items, such as old paint cans.

To help you with these questions and more, we have compiled a comprehensive list of information and resources. This guide aims to provide you with all the necessary details to smoothly transition into your new home. From trash collection schedules to proper disposal methods for hazardous materials, we have got you covered.

Homestead Exemption:

This is by far the most important!

Once you have made your home your primary residence (ID requirements in the link below) and have owned your home on January 1st, you may file for your exemption between January 1st and March 1st.   For example, if you purchase your home in June, you will not be able to apply for your exemption until January 1st of the following year.  For more information, visit:

Trash Pick-Up / Recycling

If your new home is located in Cape Coral, you can visit this site for all the information needed on your trash collection.

Hazardous Waste Disposal

Properly disposing of hazardous materials, such as fertilizers, chemicals, paint cans that still contain wet paint is crucial for environmental safety.

Horticultural Pick Up / Yard Waste

Guidelines for disposing of yard waste, such as leaves, branches, and grass clippings can found on the county’s website.

Large Item Disposal

If you have large items, such as furniture or appliances, that you no longer need, you can set those items out to the curb for your regular pick up and a bulk item pick up with me scheduled for you. Exceptions apply if you are in a gated community and you should refer to your HOA guidelines for further introductions.

Electronic waste

Electronics such as old computers, printers and cell phones, should not be thrown in the regular trash. Look for local e-waste recycling programs or drop-off locations to properly dispose of these items. Staples is a drop off point as well as other local retailers.

Sprinkler Information

In Cape Coral, the days and times that you can run your sprinkler system is based on your address.  The number of days per week you can water is subject to change if we are in a drought.

Change of Address

Don’t forget to update your address with the post office, banks, credit card companies, and any other relevant institutions. This will ensure that important mail and documents are forwarded to your new home.
